Jim was born in Campbelltown, Scotland and emigrated to Canada when he was a baby. The McGeachy family farmed on the shores of Gull Lake for many years. He loved to play baseball in his earlier years. Jim had a wonderful voice and was very keen on a musical career, but decided to try a variety of jobs before settling in Fort Saskatchewan. He worked at Sherritt Gordon for over 30 years. He was well liked by co-workers and friends and always had a great tale to tell. Jim was a man of many talents, but chief among them was working with his hands, especially woodworking. He coached minor hockey and played in the old-timers league for many years.
