Mr. Archibald Mathieson
Mr. Archibald Mathieson sen., one of the most widely known men in stock and station and pastoral circles, died in a private hospital in Melbourne yesterday.
He was in his 91st year.
A son of one of the pioneer families of the Western district, Mr. Mathieson was the senior partner and founder of Mathieson, Davis, and Co. He had a life-long association with pastoral enterprises and with stock and station activities. Beginning his business career as auctioneer for Messrs. Peck, Hudson, and Rayner, one of the earliest of stock and station agencies in Victoria, he later became managing auctioneer for Guthridge and Co., of Sale On the death of Mr. Guthridge he acquired the business, and took into partnership the late Mr. G. M. Davis M.L.C., establishing the firm ot Mathieson, Davis, and Co., which became one of the leading stock businesses of the State. The firm had branches in every town in Gippsland, in Melbourne, Albury, and many other places. For nearly 70 years Mr. Mathieson was a well-known figure at Newmarket, and he was considered the finest auctioneer and judge of stock of his day. He had many pastoral interests in Gippsland, Riverina, and other districts.
In his younger days Mr. Mathieson was a noted cricketer, and played in many inter-colonial teams. He was also an excellent gun shot, and took an active interest in coursing. For many years he Judged sheep and cattle at leading agricultural shows. A happy business association extending over more than 50 years ended with the death of Mr. Davis, M.L.C., a fortnight ago.
Mr. Mathieson leaves a widow (formerly Miss Margaret McDonald of Lake Leaghur Station), two sons (Messrs. A. Mathieson, of Fulham, and J. Mathieson, of Nambrok), seven daughters, and 16 grandchildren. Four children predeceased him. The funeral will be held at Sale at 1 p.m. to-morrow. A. A. Sleight Pty.
