She became mute from a fall during childhood. After the family emigrated to America, she was enrolled on September 14, 1846 in the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind at Staunton, Va. School records show, however, that she was only there for two weeks and was then transferred to a hospital with the notation "insane" on her record The hospital to which she was sent was not noted, so there is no record at present of the place and exact date of her death. (In a letter written by her brother Edward in 1903, which is appended, he stated that she died at a school for the deaf in Staunton, Va., in 1850. This is the only indication available on the place and date of her death.)
